Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic, progressive autoimmune disease, is a type of arthritis that affects the spine.

Ankylosing spondylitis symptoms include pain and stiffness from the neck down to the lower back. The spines bones (vertebrae) may grow or fuse together, resulting in a rigid spine. These changes may be mild or severe, and may lead to a stooped-over posture.

What is the right exercise for AS sufferers?

Regular daily training

1.     Standing:

Head stays in position, lower jaw slightly closed, shoulders relax nature; abdomen slightly adduction, feet shoulder width, etc., ankle, knee, hip and other joints to maintain the natural position, do not shift the center of gravity center.

2.     Seating:

Sit on the hard wooden chairsback straight

3. Supine:

Sleep on a hard bed; alternating sleeping side; avoid keep same posture for too long;  the pillow should not be too high;  No pillow is better; Push-up for 5 min when get up and before sleep.


Cervical Exercise

    1. Discrete feet, shoulder width, pushed down the neck muscles for two minutes, then press Fengchi 10 minutes up.

    2. Look up the sky, back to the limit, looking down at the ground, close to the chest, when rise and down, take deep breath.

    3. The head and neck upward leaning forward, backward down the stretch, continuous action 10 times.

    4. Turn around, head to the left or right slowly, shoulder to look at the maximum (not excessive force), 10 consecutive times.

    5. Flexor around: head slowly to the left lateral bending, shoulder body to remain intact, repeated about 10 times.

6. End of the action: neck, arms free activities several times, take a deep breath ends.

Lumbar exercise

    1. Open two feet, shoulder width, hands on his hips, thumb forward, four fingers on both sides , hold the rear waist Shenshu, waist in a circular swing, repeated about 10 times.

    2. The patient supine, double heel and do the fulcrum of the head and neck, waist up very hard, while breathing, supine recovery, and breath, repeat 10 times.

    3. Prone position, lower limbs straight, hands back, the head, upper and lower extremities simultaneously on both sides do dorsiflexion movement, try dorsiflexion repeated 10 times.
