Ge Hong (about 283A.D.-363 A.D.) was called as “immortal old man (Ge Xianweng)”, a well-known ancient Chinese doctor, and scientist. He had a great of important discoveries and creation in the science of medicine and pharmaceutical chemistry. He was the introducer and inductor of preventive medicine. He compiled a book entitled Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergency. It is the earliest volume to record the symptoms and diagnosis and treatment of some epidemics such as smallpox and tsutsugamushi disease. And there was the earliest record on smallpox in the world in the book. He wrote about 530 volumes, but most of them were lost. Only two works named Baopuzi (The Master Who Embraces Simplicity) and zhouhoufang (Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergency ) has left.
